Mother’s Day Treat

Mother's Day

Mother’s Day

This week I’ve been having fun pulling out quotes from my two novels that take a whimsical look at the challenges of trying to be a Supermom. My fictional friend Becky Miller showed me a lot about my tendencies to stress out about doing things for God, instead of simply accepting His love and letting that love change me.

Mothers'Can you relate? Have you ever struggled with “mommy guilt”?

Mothers'

In the midst of all you juggle, treat yourself to a little escape with The Secret Life of Becky Miller and Renovating Becky Miller

Available today as e-books for only $3.99!

Recognizing Variety

When I was working on my Master’s thesis, I struggled to articulate a core belief that has shaped many of my life choices and my desire to work in the arts.

I believe that God is so awesome and multifaceted, that we need a variety of means to communicate with Him and about Him.

I love that He’s given us a variety of art forms, music, drama, dance, poetry, sculpture, paintings etc., and even when we use them all, we only are able to convey tiny glimpses of His amazing love and glory. We constantly strive to utter the unutterable.

Within the art form of storytelling, I also believe we need variety.

Christianbook.com is highlighting the 2008 Book of the Year finalists, and as I browsed the collection of authors and titles, I thanked God for the wide range of genres and styles. Check it out! And consider trying a new author, or a new genre. You might see an new aspect of God’s nature in a new way.

I’ve Been Kindled!

I’m so excited! The Restorer has been released in a digital download version for Kindle!

Yes, is this weird world we live in, with technology shifting so quickly, more and more books are available on this Star-Trek-like reading tablet. I’m delighted one of my books is joining in.

The audio book for Renovating Becky Miller is available as an audio digital download for iPod at my local library system, but this is the first of my books to go high-tech and have a Kindle version.

I also just found the audio version of Symphony of Secrets is now out with Recorded Books (which serves libraries, schools, etc.)

Back in the day, books were either hard-cover or paperback. Now they come in myriad forms…and I’ve decided I’ll celebrate that today. 🙂

Blessings!

Audie Finalist – Listen to This!

Renovating Becky Miller (the audiobook) was just named a finalist in the Audie awards in the Inspirational/Faith-Based Fiction category! Woo hoo!

Other finalists include Ever After by Karen Kingsbury, Not Easily Broken by T.D. Jakes, The Penny by Joyce Meyer and Deborah Bedford, and River Rising by fellow Bethany author Athol Dickson.

The Audies®
is sponsored by the Audio Publishers Association (APA) and is the only awards program in the United States recognizing distinction in audio books and spoken word entertainment. Through The Audies® awards competition, publishers are able to enter titles in various genres for recognition as the premier titles. Finalists are selected for each category and from each group of finalist one winner is awarded. Finalists are showcased to the industry-at-large on the APA website, press releases and in association materials.

You can listen to a sample of the Renovating Becky Miller audiobook here.

You’ll get a good sense of the talented narrator. Your local library might carry the audiobook (or may order it, if you request it). It’s a GREAT listen for carpooling moms. 🙂

Becky Miller in Indonesia

Today a package arrived with books that looked vaguely familiar. It took me a minute to figure out what they were: the Indonesian-language edition of The Secret Life of Becky Miller.

The cover is remarkably similar. Instead of brown hair, Becky has black hair with a white streak (hmmm, a forecast of gray hair ahead?) a gray skirt instead of khaki capris, and purple high-heeled boots instead of white tennis shoes. The child clinging to the cape has orange hair instead of blonde. The title “Kisah Rahasia Sang Supermom” sounds intriguing. The overall look is more angular than the English-language version.

I giggled like a three-year old. God is so full of surprises. Who would have imagined my middle-American mom-lit could travel in my stead far across the globe? I certainly never dreamed of this when I was writing the story. I pray the book will bring laughter, hope, and truth to everyone who finds it.

Also in the Becky Miller vein, did anyone else watch Extreme Makeover Home Edition last night? It was the 100th episode, and the home they built was here in Minnesota. I mention it because my hubby and I love the show. If you, or someone you love, enjoys Extreme Makeover, consider getting them Renovating Becky Miller for Christmas. It’s a novel that plunks Becky Miller into an Extreme Makeover situation, complete with deadlines, disasters, and the heartwarming power of people coming together with love.

Blessings and gratitude!

Mom-lit for Mother’s Day!

I just received a lovely email from a reader who is planning to give copies of “The Secret Life of Becky Miller” and “Renovating Becky Miller” as gifts to friends for Mother’s Day. Reading a story about someone who “gets it” – who goes through the struggles of conflicting priorities that women face these days – especially when that story is wrapped in giggles – does seem to be a great gift.

It occurred to me that a lot of SONS and HUSBANDS and FATHERS and guy friends are going to be searching for creative gifts for the women in their lives. “She’s on a diet and yells at me when I buy chocolate, flowers don’t last very long, what do I do?”

Try the gift of mom-lit. Or any great fiction. You’ll find amazing Christian authors and their books through my links in the right-hand column. And then be sure to ALSO arrange a little quiet time so she can read. 🙂

Pick stories that are uplifting and have some long-lasting inspiration woven among the escapist adventure and humor. You’ll be her hero!

Blessings!
